Sphere® eMarketingTM Helps Sesame Workshop Double its Online Donors

Sesame Workshop is a nonprofit educational organization making a meaningful difference in the lives of children worldwide by addressing their critical developmental needs. The Workshop develops innovative and engaging educational content delivered in a variety of ways, including television, radio, books, magazines, interactive media, and community outreach. Taking advantage of all forms of media and using those who are best suited
for delivering a particular curriculum, the Workshop effectively and efficiently reaches millions of children, parents, caregivers, and educators across the globe.

Challenge

  • Sesame Workshop wanted to enhance the value of its online presence by using the website to enlist support for the mission and the organization's various brands.
  • The organization raised very little money online and needed a vehicle to engage supporters through email.
  • Sesame Workshop's new online solution had to integrate with Blackbaud’s Team Approach®, the organization's donor management system.

Solution

  • Sesame Workshop selected Sphere® eMarketing AdvancedTM to create a “Support Us” giving sub-site for Sesame Workshop Philanthropic Development.
  • The organization used dynamic segmentation and more complete constituent profiles to develop highly targeted email campaigns and appeals.
  • The organization built a tight integration between Team Approach and Blackbaud SphereTM.

Results

  • After the first year, the number of online donors doubled.
  • The organization used Sphere eMarketing Advanced to help drive its “Tickle Me Elmo Giveaway” campaign, which resulted in 8,000 new email addresses in a month.
  • The solution's on-demand integration capabilities allow the organization to export contact, activity, segmentation, subscription, and gift information from Blackbaud Sphere to Team Approach.
  • Sesame Workshop successfully integrated direct mail and online solicitation campaigns resulting in a 44 percent higher online average gift.
